What is Tomboy?

Tomboy is the tech savvy, objectively hotter younger sister of ARIES Magazine — the baddest feminist streetwear zine, and moodboard, on the block.

Tomboy is a bi-monthly newsletter. Each issue shares a Q&A with a femme member of the streetwear industry, from designers and artists to experts and activists. You should close each email with a new IG follow, new insight into the industry, and potentially a new brand/archive piece/sneaker on your wishlist. You also might get a playlist every now and then.

Why is Tomboy?

I launched ARIES as my senior thesis project in 2020, after confronting the streetwear industry’s patriarchal reality. Streetwear presents itself, shamelessly, as a testosterone-fueled paradise: from brand boardrooms, to the style “pioneers” we praise, to the size range we shop from. Women have been paving the road for streetwear since its inception — why is it so hard to see them? Hear them? Learn about them, learn from them?

ARIES publishes annually as a print zine. Tomboy was launched to open a more regular channel of conversation, inspiration, and education amongst women in this misogynistic industry.

Who is Tomboy?

Head Tomboy In Charge around here is Giovanna Ione, a Brooklyn-based fashion journalist with bylines in Hypebeast, CR Fashion Book, and Input Magazine.

I grew up in Los Angeles, and spent my first Pacsun paycheck on vintage Levi’s and a crisp pair of Air Force 1s. I’ve been writing about fashion for five years, and writing about streetwear for most of those years — with a gendered lens whenever I can get away with it. I currently live in East Williamsburg, with my vintage crewneck collection and an industrial amount of Tide Sticks.

I no longer believe in a crisp Air Force 1.
